Schools face a difficult problem with generative AI. Students can now produce essays, summaries, explanations, code, and answers within seconds. Teachers may struggle to know which work reflects student knowledge.
A simple response is to ban AI.
That approach can protect some parts of learning. Yet current research suggests the issue is more complicated. Schools must protect independent thinking without leaving students unprepared for a world where AI will be common.
The argument for banning AI
The strongest argument concerns cognitive effort.
Students learn partly through the work required to remember, plan, reason, draft, revise, and solve problems. AI can remove some of that work.
The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 examined emerging evidence on this issue. It found that students can produce better work with general AI tools without gaining equivalent knowledge. In some studies, the advantage disappeared or reversed when students later completed tests without AI.
This creates an important distinction between completing work and learning.
A student may submit a strong essay while understanding little about its argument. Another may solve mathematics problems without developing the reasoning needed to solve similar problems independently.
Academic integrity creates another concern. OECD data shows 72 percent of lower-secondary teachers believe AI can harm academic integrity by allowing students to present generated work as their own.
For examinations, foundational writing, mathematics practice, and certain classroom exercises, restricting AI therefore has a reasonable educational basis.

Where complete bans become difficult
AI use increasingly happens outside school systems.
A 2026 Education Endowment Foundation report cited National Literacy Trust research showing 66.5 percent of 13 to 18-year-olds were already using AI to support literacy and learning.
A school can block ChatGPT on its network. It cannot easily control what students use at home, on personal phones, or through other services.
This creates an enforcement problem.
Students who follow school rules may work without AI. Others may use it privately. Teachers then face the same assessment problem, but with less visibility into how students are actually working.
A complete ban can also delay AI literacy.
Students need to understand hallucinations, bias, unreliable citations, privacy risks, automated persuasion, and the limits of machine-generated information. Avoiding AI entirely does not teach these skills.
Age and privacy require separate rules
Younger students raise different concerns.
UNESCO recommends age-appropriate approaches to generative AI. Its guidance also calls for stronger data protection and age limits for independent interactions with AI platforms.
Schools therefore should not treat a seven-year-old and a seventeen-year-old under identical AI policies.
Younger children may need much tighter restrictions. Older students can gradually learn supervised use, verification, disclosure, and source checking.
The policy should change as cognitive maturity develops.
Teachers are also using AI
AI policy cannot focus only on students.
A 2026 Education Endowment Foundation trial involved 259 teachers across 68 English schools. Teachers using ChatGPT for science lesson preparation spent an average of 56.2 minutes per week on planning, compared with 81.5 minutes without it.
That represented a 31 percent reduction in preparation time. An expert panel found no apparent reduction in lesson-resource quality.
This does not prove that AI improves teaching generally. It shows why a school-wide prohibition can remove legitimate professional uses alongside problematic student uses.
Assessment may need to change
The deeper issue is not whether students can access AI.
They already can.
The harder question is which skills schools still need students to demonstrate without assistance.
Writing from memory, explaining reasoning aloud, solving problems in class, defending an argument, conducting supervised research, and showing drafts can provide stronger evidence of learning than unsupervised take-home assignments.
AI can then be permitted for selected tasks where the learning objective includes research, comparison, editing, verification, or AI literacy.
The OECD argues that AI should be used selectively for educational reasons and should not replace the cognitive effort needed to develop foundational knowledge and independent thinking.
The evidence therefore supports neither unrestricted AI use nor one universal ban.
Schools may need something harder to administer but more useful educationally. Some work should remain entirely human. Some AI use should be supervised. Some should require disclosure. Younger students may need stricter boundaries.
The purpose of school remains unchanged.
Students must leave knowing how to think when AI is available, and knowing how to think when it is not.
