An on-device language model runs some inference on a user’s phone or computer rather than sending every model operation to a remote server. This can change latency, network dependence, and where computation occurs. It does not automatically make an assistant more accurate, private, or dependable. Those outcomes depend on the model, the application, the device, and the way information moves around the model.

Apple’s 2025 technical report describes an approximately three-billion-parameter model optimized for Apple silicon. The company identifies key-value cache sharing and two-bit quantization-aware training among its design choices. It also describes a separate server model. These are company-reported system details, not an independent comparison proving that one architecture is best for every task or device. The split model arrangement illustrates that “on-device AI” can be one layer in a wider service.

Google’s Gemma 3n model card offers another design example. Google says the model family is intended for lower-resource devices and can process text, images, video, and audio as inputs, while generating text. Its selective parameter activation design is described as operating at an effective two-billion or four-billion parameter scale, though the total parameter counts are larger. The card also specifies input formats and a 32,000-token context limit. These published details describe the model, not guaranteed performance on every handset.

Parameter count is therefore an incomplete comparison. A model’s stored weights are only part of its memory use. Runtime memory can also depend on context length, cached attention states, the input modality, and the software implementation. Speed can vary with processor, memory bandwidth, thermal limits, operating-system scheduling, and background activity. A smaller parameter figure alone does not establish that a model will respond faster or use less energy in a particular application.

Benchmarks help, provided readers look at what is measured. MLCommons’ mobile inference suite measures how quickly systems process inputs and return results for specified models and tasks. That kind of result can inform latency comparisons under its test conditions. It is not, by itself, a measure of factual accuracy, privacy, accessibility, battery life in everyday use, or safety on sensitive tasks. Those questions require additional tests with relevant prompts, devices, and use conditions.

The privacy distinction also needs care. Local inference can reduce the need to transmit the prompt to a remote model for that operation. But an application might still send telemetry, synchronize history, call a cloud service for harder requests, or share information through connected features. A model location is not the same thing as a complete data-flow audit. Users need the application’s data practices and system settings to understand what is retained or transmitted.

Local models also face capability limits. A model may work well for short summaries and struggle with long documents, uncommon languages, multi-step reasoning, or fresh information. If an app routes a request to a server when the local model cannot answer, the handoff should be clear. Offline availability is useful only for supported tasks and available content; a model without network access cannot independently retrieve new facts from the web.

Evaluating these systems takes more than reading a parameter count or a manufacturer’s benchmark. A credible comparison reports model version, device, software, quantization, task, latency, memory, energy method, and quality measure. It also distinguishes company claims from independent replication. On-device models can extend AI into more settings, but their practical value is a measured property of a complete system. The label alone does not establish what the system can do or where a user’s data travels.

How Jennifer Aniston’s LolaVie brand grew sales 40% with CTV ads

For its first CTV campaign, Jennifer Aniston’s DTC haircare brand LolaVie had a few non-negotiables. The campaign had to be simple. It had to demonstrate measurable impact. And it had to be full-funnel.

LolaVie used Roku Ads Manager to test and optimize creatives — reaching millions of potential customers at all stages of their purchase journeys. Roku Ads Manager helped the brand convey LolaVie’s playful voice while helping drive omnichannel sales across both ecommerce and retail touchpoints.

The campaign included an Action Ad overlay that let viewers shop directly from their TVs by clicking OK on their Roku remote. This guided them to the website to buy LolaVie products.
