October 2026 has brought two competing AI model families into focus. OpenAI's GPT-6 includes Astra, Sol and Luna. Anthropic's Claude 5.5 includes Opus, Sonnet and Haiku.

The differences matter for developers, researchers and businesses running AI systems daily. A model's highest benchmark score rarely tells the whole story.

The strongest models

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's most capable model for demanding professional work. It focuses on advanced reasoning, software engineering, scientific problems and computer use.

Claude Opus 5.5 targets similar work, including coding and long-running AI agents. Anthropic also offers Sonnet 5.5 for routine development and Haiku 5.5 for smaller workloads.

Both companies provide cheaper models for tasks requiring less computation.

Claude Haiku 5.5

GPT-6 Astra costs 2.5 times as much per token as Opus 5.5. Sol and Sonnet have identical standard rates.

Luna and Haiku also match at their lowest pricing tiers. Haiku's rates increase for prompts exceeding 100,000 tokens.

Actual task costs depend on reasoning tokens, caching, retries and tool use.

Coding performance and practical differences

OpenAI reports GPT-6 Astra reaching 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. It also reports 74.1% on DeepSWE v1.1.

Anthropic reports Sonnet 5.5 reaching 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. However, different evaluation setups can affect comparisons.

These figures shouldn't be treated as a direct ranking without matching test conditions.

For website development, Sonnet 5.5 offers an attractive combination of capability and API cost. Astra is worth testing on complex debugging, migrations and multi-stage engineering tasks.

Opus 5.5 provides another option for demanding development at lower token rates than Astra.

Monthly subscription costs

ChatGPT offers Plus at $20 monthly and Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500. Claude Pro costs $20 monthly, while Max starts at $100.

Higher subscriptions provide additional usage, but limits still apply.

ChatGPT's $100 Pro tier includes 50 GPT-6 Pro messages weekly in Chat. The $200 tier increases that allowance to 200 weekly messages.

Claude Max offers usage tiers based on five or twenty times its Pro allowance per five-hour session. Weekly limits also apply.

API charges are separate from standard chat subscriptions.

Which model makes financial sense?

For high-volume text processing, Luna and Haiku are the natural starting points. Their published entry rates are much lower than flagship models.

For routine software engineering, Sol and Sonnet deserve direct testing. They share the same standard API input and output rates.

For difficult work, Astra and Opus should be compared using completed tasks rather than isolated answers. A cheaper model can become expensive through repeated failed attempts.

Run the same debugging task through both systems. Record total tokens, completion time, test results and manual corrections.

A benchmark measures performance under defined conditions. Your own repository provides the more relevant evidence.

This newsletter cannot settle every model choice. It provides a regular check on changing capabilities and costs. The useful decisions happen during your own work, where repeated testing builds better judgment over time.
