Google is making its paid AI services more accessible to college students. On August 19, 2026, the company announced one-year Google AI plans at no cost for eligible students in several countries.

The offer is part of Google's wider push to make Gemini a regular study tool. Students can use it for research, class materials, quizzes, revision and academic planning.

Eligible college students in the United States can receive Google AI Pro for 12 months without paying the normal $19.99 monthly subscription fee. The plan includes higher Gemini usage limits, Gemini integration with Google apps, 5 TB of storage and access to additional Google services.

Eligible college students outside the United States can receive Google AI Plus for one year at no cost. That plan includes Gemini Omni, higher usage limits and 400 GB of storage.

Google has also introduced a dedicated Student Hub inside Gemini. Students can create study notebooks, generate flashcards and take practice quizzes from one place.

Study Notebooks may become one of the more useful academic features. Students can upload lecture notes, course materials and other documents. Gemini then organizes the material into smaller learning sections.

A diagnostic quiz can identify areas where the student needs more practice. Gemini can then prepare lessons and quizzes around those gaps. Google says upcoming improvements will add graphs and images to lessons.

With permission, Gemini will also be able to identify exam dates and assignment deadlines from a syllabus and place them into Google Calendar.

Interactive visualizations add another learning format. Gemini can generate tables, diagrams and functional 3D simulations related to a student's question. A learner studying DNA, for example, can explore a rotatable 3D structure instead of relying only on text.

Google is also adding Deep Research to Gemini Live. Students can request multi-step research, continue other tasks and receive a notification when the research report is completed. They can then discuss the findings with Gemini through voice conversations.

These additions show how quickly AI study tools are moving beyond simple question-and-answer systems. They are becoming connected academic workspaces covering research, revision, organization and interactive learning.

For students, the free year provides an opportunity to test whether these tools improve their learning habits. The larger question will come later: whether AI becomes another optional study aid or a permanent layer of everyday university education.
