By September 2026, ChatGPT remains the world’s most widely used standalone generative AI platform. The latest available web and mobile measurements support that conclusion, although the market is becoming less concentrated than it was during the first years of consumer AI.

Similarweb’s August 2026 global ranking places ChatGPT first in the AI Chatbots and Tools category. Gemini ranks second, Claude third and DeepSeek fourth. ChatGPT.com also ranks fifth among all websites worldwide, behind Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. This puts an AI assistant among the largest consumer internet destinations measured by global web traffic.

Mobile usage tells a similar story. Sensor Tower reported that ChatGPT became the fastest mobile application to reach one billion monthly active users, reaching that level in May 2026. ChatGPT, Gemini and DeepSeek together accounted for nearly 90 percent of time spent across AI assistant apps during the first quarter of 2026.

OpenAI reported on August 31 that ChatGPT had passed one billion weekly active users. Because this figure comes from the company itself, it should be considered alongside independent measurements rather than treated as a direct comparison with competitors. Still, the scale is consistent with external traffic and mobile data showing ChatGPT in first position.

The next wave of millionaires will be people who figured out how to make AI work for them.

The lead, however, is narrowing.

Sensor Tower found that ChatGPT’s cross-platform True Audience share fell below 50 percent for the first time in March 2026. Gemini has expanded across the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea, helped partly by distribution through Google’s Android and service ecosystem. Claude recorded particularly strong growth, with its True Audience increasing 452 percent year over year in May.

Earlier 2026 data from Andreessen Horowitz provides another comparison. Its March consumer AI study, using January Similarweb and Sensor Tower data, found ChatGPT had about 2.7 times Gemini’s monthly web traffic and roughly 2.5 times its mobile monthly active users. The same report described ChatGPT as the largest consumer AI product while noting increasing competition for the position of default AI assistant.

Usage also differs by platform. ChatGPT has developed the broadest general-purpose audience. Gemini benefits from Google’s distribution and existing services. Claude has grown strongly among professional and knowledge-work users. DeepSeek remains one of the largest alternatives and contributes substantially to global AI app engagement.

There is an important measurement issue. AI is now embedded inside search engines, phones, productivity software, browsers and creative applications. Someone using AI features inside Google Search, Canva or another application may never visit a dedicated chatbot website. For that reason, no single traffic statistic measures total global AI exposure.

But when the comparison is limited to standalone consumer generative AI assistants, the evidence available through September 2026 points in one direction. ChatGPT remains the most used platform, while the distance separating it from the next group is gradually becoming smaller.
