Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22 as the first model in its 5.5 family. The company describes it as comparable to Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and forty percent cheaper to run than Opus 5. Reuters reported the launch and repeated that the performance and cost figures came from Anthropic.

The platform documentation gives a more concrete deployment picture. Opus 5.5 is priced at four US dollars per million input tokens and twenty US dollars per million output tokens. It has a one-million-token context window and a maximum synchronous output of 128,000 tokens. The documentation lists a June 2026 knowledge cutoff.

AI made PMs faster. Multiplayer mode is still broken.

A PM can summarize research, draft a PRD, and mock up a prototype before lunch. The hard part starts when the team has to decide what actually gets built.

Jira Product Discovery gives product teams one place to capture insights, prioritize ideas with consistent frameworks, and build living roadmaps stakeholders can rally around.

And because it’s connected to Jira, the context behind every decision stays with the work—so developers and their agents know not just what to build, but why.

AI helps PMs move faster. Jira Product Discovery helps the whole team build with confidence.

The model also changes behavior that applications may depend on. Adaptive thinking is always enabled. The documentation says thinking cannot be turned off. Forced tool use returns an error. Thinking blocks are tied to the model and conversation. A previous computer-use tool is not accepted on the Claude API or Google Cloud.

These are compatibility details, not marketing descriptors. An application that assumes optional thinking, forced tool execution, or the earlier computer-use identifier could require code changes. An interface that displays text between tool calls may also need adjustment because the default response can return empty thinking blocks between calls.

Anthropic reports a one-million-token context window and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens across its comparison table. Larger context does not guarantee better reasoning. It changes the amount of material an application can place in one request. Performance still depends on retrieval, prompt structure, tool design, task length, and the checks applied to the result.

The company says Opus 5.5 leads its internal benchmarks for agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work. It also warns that benchmark margins at this capability level are becoming a less reliable guide to differences in real work. That qualification is important. A benchmark result is evidence under a defined test setup, not a universal productivity measure.

Safety evidence is similarly bounded. Anthropic says external evaluators, including METR and Frontier Design, tested the model before release. It also reports stronger results on its own automated behavioral audit and safeguards similar to those used for its more capable models. Reuters reports these statements as company claims and notes the release’s wider safety context.

The platform documentation lists active availability through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry, and Claude Platform on AWS. Availability across providers does not mean identical behavior. The documentation itself notes a provider-specific computer-use change and separate model identifiers. Deployment records therefore need both provider and model information.

For developers, the release is a migration event as much as a model event. The relevant checks include token pricing, cache pricing, output limits, thinking behavior, tool-call handling, provider support, and safety fallback. A cheaper token rate may not produce a cheaper task if a workflow uses more output or needs additional verification.

The verified conclusion is limited. Opus 5.5 changes the price and interface conditions around one frontier model release. That distinction matters when cost comparisons move from tokens to complete workflows. Anthropic’s performance and safety comparisons remain partly self-reported. Independent workload tests, reproducible evaluations, and application-level monitoring are still needed before generalising the launch claims across unrelated tasks.
