An AI tutor can raise a student’s score while the tool is available, yet leave less knowledge behind afterward. Recent experiments show why assisted task performance and independent learning are different outcomes. The distinction matters whenever a system supplies answers during practice.

In a randomized trial with Turkish high school mathematics students, researchers compared unrestricted GPT-4 assistance with a version designed to give teacher-written hints. Students using either tool performed better during practice. On a later exam without AI, the unrestricted group scored below the control group, while the guided group’s result was close to the control group.
The researchers reported a 17 percent lower score for the unrestricted group on that unassisted exam. The guided system improved practice scores more than the unrestricted one. Its advantage did not translate into a higher unassisted exam result. The study therefore supports a narrow conclusion about one tool design, subject, and school setting.
A different randomized study examined an AI tutor embedded in university courses at a large public university in the United States. The trial included 2,379 undergraduate students and 30 instructors across several disciplines. Students given access to the tutor had lower final grades and less participation in the learning platform than students in comparison sections.

That study was released as an October 2026 discussion paper through the Institute of Labor Economics. It has not established that every AI tutor reduces learning. It does add a different setting and outcome to the evidence. University course integration differs from short mathematics practice in a secondary school.
The OECD’s 2026 Digital Education Outlook reviews these differences. It says general-purpose AI can improve the work produced on a task without necessarily creating durable learning. It also describes evidence for systems designed around teaching methods, including tools that support human tutors. Design and classroom use both matter.
A useful evaluation therefore asks what happens after assistance is removed. A practice score measures supported performance. A later test measures whether the learner can recall, explain, or apply material independently. Researchers may also measure retention over time, transfer to unfamiliar tasks, error detection, and changes in effort.
The studies do not support a simple choice between banning AI and handing over instruction. They show that access alone is an incomplete measure of educational value. A tutor that gives complete answers can reduce the need to retrieve information or attempt a solution. A hint-based tool may preserve some of that effort, but its effectiveness depends on the prompt, lesson, teacher, and student.
These trials also have boundaries. One concerns high school mathematics in a specific country and curriculum. The other covers undergraduates at one US institution. Both test defined interventions rather than all commercial chatbots. The findings should guide questions for evaluation, not serve as a universal prediction about students everywhere.
Schools and families can ask whether an AI system is meant to answer, explain, question, or coach. They can also ask which outcome was tested and whether students were later assessed without help. Data handling, age suitability, accuracy, and teacher oversight remain separate issues from learning gains.
The key lesson is methodological. Measure what learners can do after the tool is gone, not only what they finish with it. Future evidence will need longer follow-up and diverse classrooms. For this daily check-in, the distinction between task completion and retained understanding is the finding to keep in view.
