Beyond learning how to write prompts
Prompt writing is only one small part of school AI literacy. UNESCO's student framework identifies 12 competencies across four areas. They cover a human-centred mindset, AI ethics, techniques and applications, and AI system design. Students progress through understanding, applying and creating.
This changes what an AI lesson should achieve. Students need to question an answer before accepting it. They need to understand that fluent output can still be wrong. Source checking, judgment and responsibility remain human tasks.
AI literacy also means understanding where AI appears around them. Search engines, recommendation systems, writing tools and automated decisions already shape digital life. A school curriculum should help students examine these systems instead of treating AI as one separate software lesson.
AI belongs across school subjects
Computer science can explain models, data and algorithms. Other subjects can teach students how AI affects real work.
A language class can compare human and AI writing. Science students can test generated explanations against evidence. Social studies can examine bias, accountability and automated decisions. Art classes can discuss authorship and machine generated work.
The goal is learning how to work with AI while keeping independent thought.

Teachers need AI literacy too
UNESCO's teacher framework contains 15 competencies across five areas, including AI foundations, ethics, pedagogy and professional learning. It reflects a simple problem. Students cannot receive sound AI education if teachers lack the knowledge to evaluate the same tools.
Schools therefore need teacher training alongside student lessons. Assessment may also need more oral explanation, source checking and project work that reveals how a student reached an answer.
AI literacy in school should begin before AI becomes invisible to students.
